Welcome to the Reception Class Page!

In our Reception Class we all work together to provide a positive, caring, safe and stimulating environment for the children. Our approach incorporates all learning styles through activity based topics following children's interests. We continue to support our children to be active learners, exploring the world through a range of indoor and outdoor experiences.

We are fortunate to share a stimulating outdoor learning environment with out Nursery class. This means we have access to a wonderful woodland area on our doorstep. We are influenced by 'forest school' thinking , supporting the children to 'go on adventures' take risks and develop an appreciation of the natural world through physical and sensory exploration.
We continue to develop our outdoor space through the 'Help me Grow' project. We currently have a working party who give their time to undertake mini projects in the early years garden area. If this is something you would like to contribute to, our next gathering is being planned now.

The Reception Class Team
Mrs McKenzie is the Class Teacher on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings and Mrs Eagle is the Class Teacher on Wednesday afternoons, Thursdays and Fridays. The class is supported by Support Teachers Mrs Allen and Mrs Cummings and Teaching Assistant Mrs Denise Wright throughout the week.

Tapestry in our Reception Class

All children in Reception have their learning experiences recorded on 'Tapestry,' an online learning journal. When staff complete an observation on a child, it is then uploaded to their journal, often with photos or videos for parents and children to enjoy. Parents receive a notification on their phone or by email and they can then comment on their child's achievement. We also encourage parents to add photos and descriptions of exciting events that have happened at home which help us to work together to create an amazing diary of your child's time in Reception.

Reading in our Reception Class

In Reception, the children build on their phonic knowledge, learning to blend sounds together to read words. We use a scheme called ‘Letters and Sounds’ to teach phonics. Alongside developing the children’s understanding of phonics, they also learn to recognise ‘tricky’ words by sight. Children are given a Reading Record Book and reading scheme books are sent home so that new skills can be reinforced. We use a variety of reading scheme books to support the teaching of reading.  Read a variety of books as much as you can with your child at home to show what a pleasurable experience reading can be. When the children start bringing home reading books, we ask that you share them at least twice a week. When you have shared your child's reading book and written a comment in their yellow reading dairy, please put their book bag into the blue box stored on our lunch trolley. During the school day, we will give you child a new book to share at home.

COMING SOON! Look out for our special Phonic Information Sessions for parents and carers later in the Autumn Term. Details to follow shortly...
